SZKIEVE: INTERVIEWS BIO & ITV FROM RE:MOTE INDUCTION - 2000 Excerpts from a longer interview about my activites as Hushush headhoncho Dimitri della Faille was well known through the 1990's for his web work - you would often come across links to "foe's site". With the end of that decade he started his own label with a tribute to the Hafler Trio. This year he releases his own first album under the name szkieve, along with the hed nod series of 12"s by Mick Harris and the Threesome series with Mick Harris, Mark Spybey and Ambre. We talked to Dimitri about these releases and the year ahead for Hushush. [...] Re:mote Induction : I think if you are involved in this scene actively enough it is likely that you will become involved in it - in some ways this is reflected by your formation of hushush but your second CD is your own music. How long have you worked on music yourself and is this Szkieve release your first? hushush : I'm not sure that there's a mechanical link in between being involved in the scene and doing something for it. I know several people who just like to hang out at concerts and listening to music. But it is true that the ratio of "passive" people versus actors of the scene is extremely low. Probably one out of ten, even eight. Pretty close to what was happening on the garage punk rock scene. My music? It's quite new to me that I'm doing "music". The person who I need to credit for that is Scott Gibbons of Lilith. He's the fuse. So I started in 1998. Nothing exciting then. Just started to understand the musical language its rules. Then I got bored and thought rules are not made for me. Because I hated to work with MIDI applications and material I was more into audio sound sculpting. The very first tracks sounded really bad. It took me two years to get the idea behind using the effects, changing structures etc. I have had a couple of tracks on compilation. Because my friends told me that there's now a step that I need to do which is stopping to complain about my sounds and release them. All the tracks of this first release have walked through a long process of remakes and remixes until the very last minute when I had to leave my place to master the whole thing with John Sellekaers at Metarc's Studios in Brussels. Re:mote Induction : What are the ideas of Szkieve and how is this demonstrated in the way you work and in the sound of the final release DES GERMES DE QUELQUE CHOSE? Is this release the defined "sound" of Szkieve or just one aspect which we will see changing with future releases? hushush : Yes, "Des germes de quelque chose" means in French that something is still in the ground and will see daylight as soon as it is ready. You know when you see a bulb it is really tough to say which plant it will give after the winter. You can only tell that it's a plant. So this is just a way for me to see the reaction, to get some feedback from people who are not as easy to please as my friends are. I don't know yet how this will evolve. In my case I was more doing a test with the different kinds of colors and the different sizes of paintbrushes. All the sounds on this first disc were sampled from original sources, I didn't sample anyone other than objects, nature and me. Now, I'd like to get a richer sound possibly with many acoustic instruments. I'm thinking of getting a more jazzy sound, I mean by that a more colorful sound. I would also like to do some more live gigs, I think the music takes all its power and sense by being played live. [...] NTVWR: PTR June 2000 |
